“Heavy Metal” at the “Guts or Glory” Contest

This was a lot of fun – and it surprised everyone!

On Friday night, after the Opening Ceremonies of the District 45 Toastmasters Spring Conference this last weekend, on May 23-25, 2014, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in South Portland, Maine, an unofficial fun-time event took place. It was a
“GUTS or GLORY Contest.”

Those of us who were willing to participate in the contest signed up “blindly” to compete at the last minute. When a contestant’s name was called to the stage, they would choose to do something unplanned and unexpected for 1-2 timed-minutes (timing rules as Toastmasters Table Topic ™ rules). The choice would be either for GUTS (for doing something daring) or for GLORY (for doing something spectacular).

When I was called to the stage at 9:20pm, I chose “GUTS” and then performed this completely unprepared and off-the-cuff message. Doing something I had not publicly done in several, several years, I actually sang 2 very famous classic songs a cappella with a “Heavy Metal” voice. No one saw this coming- being able to see a completely unexpected, different side of me.
